Odisha Converts Cyclone Shelters into Smart Emergency Hubs

The Odisha State Disaster Management Authority has begun retrofitting existing cyclone shelters into smart emergency hubs. These centers now feature solar backup, satellite internet, community radio systems, and inflatable tents for overflow accommodation. Each center can host up to 500 evacuees and function independently for up to 5 days post-disaster. Community members are trained to use emergency kits, satellite phones, and first-aid units. Children’s play zones and women’s spaces are also integrated. In the latest simulation drill, the shelters supported efficient coordination and fast response time. The project, backed by UNDP, aims to make coastal Odisha cyclone-resilient and ensure dignity and efficiency in disaster response. By 2026, over 400 shelters will be upgraded with these smart features.
